I use to work in Sandy and I would often eat at The Philadelphian weekly. I have been looking for a time to go back and eat again, but the 40 minute drive has always deterred me. I have been craving their Philadelphian style cheese steak for a while. I remember it being the closest thing I have had to a "real" Philly cheese steak since moving back to Utah from Philadelphia. Well that time finally arrived this past weekend when I was in Sandy for my Nieces birthday party.
Critique:

I don't know if my concept of a "real" cheesesteak has been skewed with time, or if my own standards of what I expect from a Philly has changed, but I walked away from The Philadelphian extremely disappointed.

I am not even sure if I could call their "Philadelphian" a Philly cheesesteak. It was nothing like I remembered. I think my closest comparison would be the Arby's cheesesteak. The meat was pleasantly seasoned but was thinly sliced which doesn't lend well in my opinion to a steak sandwich. Deli meat should never be described as steak. One problem with thinly slicing the meat is that you loose a lot of the natural flavor and juice of the meat and it ends up tasting dry. I love a nice juicy cheesesteak, one that as you eat it juices drip onto your hands and into your plate. Consequently my sandwich was dry and the small amount of provolone cheese didn't help the cause. The rest of the sandwich was topped with what I can only guess were fresh vegetables like bell peppers and mushrooms (Their produce sat in open boxes in the dinner area for all the customers to see, so I can assume this is also what was on our sandwiches.) and even though they were fresh they had a very odd flavor to them that both my wife and I noticed.

One bright note of my experience was that I ordered the home made onion rings and I really liked them. They were hand dipped in a homemade batter and deep fried until crispy. I like the batter they used and it was very refreshing to have some onion rings that didn't seem to be store bought. The ironic thing about the onion rings is that most people don't like them, but love the sandwiches so maybe I was having a backwards day.

Usually I wouldn't comment on the cleanliness of the building but in this case I feel like I have to. I haven't eaten in this dirty of a restaurant since I was in Tijuana Mexico. My wife commented that she wondered how they passed their health and safety inspections, this place made a truck stop restroom look clean. The tables were not clean, there was food all over the floors the garbage cans were overflowing and I didn't even dare to touch the counter-tops. Oddly enough I don't think the place has changed in all of those years since I ate there while working in Sandy, the filthiness of the place didn't bother me back then, but yet it did now. It might have had something to do with my family being there with me.

Overall I went home greatly displeased with my meal and embarrassed because I had talked up The Philadelphian so much to my wife and she couldn't even finish her 4 inch sandwich. The best part about having eaten there is that now I don't have to think of ways to make it back like I did before.
Every time I pass through Show Low Arizona I have to stop by the Native New Yorker to eat. The tradition started with the day the restaurant opened (I happened to be around when it did) They had great grand opening prices which made me buy a lot of wings, and I have been addicted ever since.

Over the years that I have been going to the Native New Yorker it seems that my infatuation with the place has been dwindling. I haven't decided if it is because the food/prices are changing and I no longer think their wings are the best thing since sliced bread or if local places closer to home are finally catching up.
When they first opened they were only $0.25 cents a wing. I was like a kid in a candy store. I order a few of almost every flavor they had.

Here is a list of their wings. I have tried them all except the Suicide (I love hot and spicy things, but I strongly believe the spice should never distract from the over all flavor and experience.)
I think you have to somewhat like the flavor or mustard or you may not like these wings. They are a lot sweeter than you would think, but with just a touch of heat and bitter (from the mustard). They really are a thing of beauty.
I like these wings because they are of the Louisiana style of wings which are my favorite. They closely resemble the kind I make at home and love. They have a nice butter base with a little heat and a taste of vinegar... Oh my mouth is watering while I type this.

The service is always different when I eat at the Native New Yorker, sometimes is pretty good other times it leaves me wishing I had a glass of water. Because of the up and down nature of the service I don't think its a restaurant culture thing, but more so luck of the draw.

Over all I enjoy eating the Native New Yorker. I heard they have other food there, I think I have even tried some of it, but I don't go for the burger or steaks. I go for the wings. So if you are looking for some great tasting wings and you are in the White Mountains area. This is a must stop.
Well Arby's is Aryb's. I have always enjoyed eating at Arby's. People say that if you work at a place you won't be able to eat there after you quit, but I worked at Arbys as a teenager and still love it today. So you might ask "Why review a fastfood chain" well because of the above mentioned commericial. That their Philly Cheese Steak is the "best Philly sandwich outside of Philadelphia"
Although it had a lot of taste I just don't think thin sliced roast beef works that well for me in a philly cheese steak. When I eat a cheesesteak I need chunks of meat dripping with greese and smothered in hot melted cheese. What I got at Arbys was thin sliced meat with swiss cheese. Don't get me wrong, the sandwich was actually pretty good. The meat was flavored well with seasons and pepper (I love me the pepper) mixed with grilled onion and peppers. Perhaps they went a little over board with the name. I wouldn't call this a true Philly, but I would call it more of a cheesesteak. Overall for five bucks I won't complain (much). If I wanted a good sandwhich while on the go, this is the one I will pick.
Walking into the diner is like taking a step back into the past with its green Italian marble counter tops, tiled floors, and Tiffany glass windows. The food here is just a sideshow to the atmosphere.
We had just gotten done backpacking in the High Uintas and decided that we were hungry enough to make the 20 mile drive out of our way to try out the Road Island Diner. I had heard they had a mean cheese steak and wanted to give it a try. The diner itself is an old 1939 O'Mahony Dining car. Which in of itself is impressive. To read more about the history of the diner car go to Jerry O'Mahony Dining Cars.
The steak was an interesting one, it was actually smoked brisket, a new twist that I wasn't sure about at first but in the end, ended up liking. My brisket was pretty good, but my brother seemed to end up with a lot of crispy over cooked pieces. Overall I really enjoyed my cheese steak. It was nice and messy and I needed a fork to finish it off once my sandwich was done.

I ordered a cherry coke (made from cherry syrup) which had to be one of the worst drinks I have ever had. I don't know what the problem was with the drink, but it didn't taste like coke and it didn't taste like cherry. I couldn't finish it and asked for a Dr. Pepper instead. I was a little surprised when I got my bill and saw that I was charge $0.80 cents for the cherry syrup squirt.

For the side that came with my sandwich I got the toasted mac-n-cheese, which was actually very good. I am not a huge mac-n-cheese guy, but I would order this on its own any day. It was that good.
Overall I enjoyed my sandwich, but didn't care much for the service or the cherry coke. Our server seemed to try, but just missed the mark. He had a corny sense of humor that I didn't really care for and would have rather just been left alone. I do wish he would have informed me of the price for a squirt of syrup rather than letting it surprise me when I got the bill. The cost of the meal was a little on the high side, but the atmosphere in which I ate it made up for it.

Even if you don't like the service or the food, it is worth stopping by just for the atmosphere.
I had actually brought a lunch with me to work and was intending to only come along for the ride. I was surprised to see the number of name brand fast food joints in the food court (I hadn't been there in years.) One place that stood out for me was Charley's Grilled Subs. There is something about a grilled steak sub that just speaks to me so I ended up deciding to give them a try.
I think I have a preconceived notion about mall food court food, that all food purchased at a food court will be more expensive with smaller portions. In the case of Charley's Grilled Subs I would say that the price was actually pretty good, but the portions were smaller.
Charley's Grilled Subs has a Steak & Fry deal for $5 bucks. Not a bad deal at all. I upgraded my sandwich from the standard sandwich of steak, grilled onions, and provolone to the deluxe which came with steak, grilled onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and provolone. So basically upgrading added mushrooms and green peppers, for only $0.20 cents (That's a good deal in my opinion). Once again I had to pay for fry sauce ($0.25.) I could rant about having to pay for fry sauce but I honestly think this is becoming the standard now, so instead I will praise those who still offer it for free.
The first thing I noticed was that the meat was not overflowing the bun, but rather nicely fitting within its bread home. I thought the sandwich was dry and needed more moisture, usually in the form of grease (I have a hard time with dry sandwiches.) I think there is something to be said about a sloppy sandwich, they just seem to be more appealing to me. If I have to pull out my fork to finish off the sandwich that is a great sign. Overall I wasn't that impressed with the sandwich, the dryness killed me. I guess I could say it was right on par with what I would expect from a mall food court or fast food Just remember you don't go to the mall to get food, you go to buy overpriced merchandise and when I was younger to pick up on girls. Would I ever go back to Charley's Grilled Subs to eat, maybe if I was in the mall already and needed to eat, but I doubt I will head there just for the food.
The Reuben was what I would consider a true Reuben sandwich. Corned hash piled high with sauerkaout and a Russian dressing all between two pieces of grilled spiral rye bread. One word for you Yummy! OK so the sandwich hit the spot and it didn't disappoint my craving, which sometimes puts more pressure on the food because now I have talked it up so much in my head that even the smallest imperfections can ruin it. As a word to the wise, when eating this sandwich make sure you eat it first (I usually eat my fries first before they go cold) but in this case I waited too long to finish the 2nd half of my sandwich and the bread became soggy from the sauerkraut.
I didn't go with the beer battered fries this time like I did last time, and just went with the standard order of fries, which were pretty good. By this time I was getting pretty full and I hadn't even gotten to my wings. I ordered their spicy wings, which were your traditional Louisiana style wings (my favorite, gold star to them) and they were described as being hot. Usually most places definition of hot is not my definition, but in this case I felt they really were actually hot. They had some kick to them, sure they didn't make my eyes water or my make my mouth run for a drink, but they were just hot enough as to not distract from the flavor. Over all I was pretty impressed with the chicken wings. The sauce was think, the dipping sauces were free, the chicken was well cooked, but not overdone. They are not the best wings I have had, but they are certainly worth ordering again.

Today we ended up at La Jolla Groves for lunch. It wasn't a place that I would have normally picked for lunch, but I heard they had a cheese steak so I decided to go.

Before I get into the actual review of La Jolla Groves I want to rant for a second and point out that I truly dislike having to go to the Riverwoods for anything. The parking is atrocious, and getting in and out of the place is horrendous. Now with that aside I can talk about my experience at La Jolla Groves. The first thing of note about the restaurant is that they don't have a sign, so finding it was more challenging than it should have been. I would have missed it altogether had it not been for the small wooden sign out in front of their bakery shop, even then I had to walk around to find the actual door to the restaurant.
At first I found this to be a bit corny, but by the end of the meal I was starting to like the natural feel the place had to it.

Our waiter was quick to take our order when we were ready, and a basket of fresh rolls were promptly brought to us while we waited for our food. We were given a variety of flavors for the rolls, I would say they were: white, honey wheat, sun roasted tomato and perhaps a pesto flavor roll. I was able to try all four and I enjoyed them all, each had their own unique taste which brought a broad palate of flavor with them.
The steak sandwich had a good portion of thick chunks of grilled steak tenderloin, which were very tender, and lightly marinated. I would have preferred to have had a stronger marinated flavor. The steak was covered in cheese, and topped with garden vegetables and grilled onions. Overall I really enjoyed the flavors of the sandwich, oh and did I mention that my steak was very tender? You can go a long way with just a properly cooked steak. Even though it wasn't a Philly Cheese Steak, it was a very good steak sandwich, which was complimented by a nice sized salad topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, croutons and a vinaigrette dressing.
One of my number one criteria for feeling like I had good service is if I ever had to reach for an empty glass of water. When I am eating it seems I go through at least 3 or 4 glasses of water a meal, and when my glass is empty I stop eating and get very agitated. For some reason I have to have water with my meal, or else I find it very difficult to eat. This is probably just me, but it is the main reason why I put it number one on my list. At La Jolla Groves, I never once reached for an empty glass of water. It has been a very long time since this last occurred. Besides the water, our waiter was helpful, our food came out in a timely manner (it was pretty busy the day we ate there so that is impressive), my only ding towards the service was that when it was time to pay our bill our waiter seemed to have disappeared, and our bill had to be brought by another server.
The atmosphere was pleasant, the service was exceptional, and my food was good. My only negative on the day would have been the price. When I go to lunch I expect to pay around $7 bucks for a meal, so being over $10 dollars it exceeds what I consider an average priced lunch meal. They could do with lunch specials that would bring that price into the $7 dollar range. Now if I were to go there for dinner, the price would be on the low side for what I would expect to pay for dinner at a sit down restaurant. So take it as you will.
As I was sitting on my couch watching TV a commercial for Domino's Pizza came on. The commercial is called The Man Behind the Chicken.

Being hungry and a sucker for chicken wings I decided I was going to get some. The only problem, I didn't know where the Domino's in my town was. Good thing I have the Internet. When I went to Domino's site, I clicked on the deal I had seen on TV. A 2 topping medium pizza and 8 chicken wings for $5.99 each. The first thing that came up was an online ordering system. I was able to complete my whole order online with very little effort. After placing the order they provided a tracking page that allows me to see how far along my order was. Talk about speeding up the ordering and pickup process. For a guy who spends a lot of time online, this is a genius idea and it makes me wonder why everyone else isn't doing it.

I ordered my favorite pizza, Pineapple and Pepperoni and I got it on their garlic-seasoned crust, and 8 of their Sweet Mango Habanero wings. They actually offer 4 different flavors: Hot, Sweet Mango Habanero, BBQ and Plain. They also came with one free dipping sauce (Kicker Hot Sauce, Sweet Mango Habanero, BBQ, and Ranch), which I applaud because it seems like more and more establishments are starting to charge for the little things like dipping sauce. See: Wing Coop, Little Caesars.

I will be honest, my expectations for the wings were pretty low. I haven't had wings from a franchise pizza joint that I have really liked. To my surprise the wings were actually pretty good. The sauce was thick and in abundance. The wings were nether too sweet, or too hot, but were balanced very well. There was just enough heat to get my nose running after a few wings, but not enough to cause my mouth to be on fire. The ranch dressing dipping sauce had a nice zip to it that complimented the wings very nicely.

The pizza was by far the best Domino's pizza I have had to date, which tells me they really are trying to make their pizza better. The sauce was good, the pepperonis were yummy, and the pineapple was slightly roasted (from baking) and sweet. My only real complaint was that I think there was too much sauce which gave it a slight soggy texture. My biggest surprise though was the crust. I LOVED the crust. I literally was looking forward to eating the crust. Usually the crust is an afterthought and most of the times it is never eaten. The crust was light and airy, with a nice hint of garlic and creamy butter. I would buy a pizza with no toppings just to have the crust. It think they call those bread sticks. The next time I order I will have to get some bread sticks to see if they are the same.

I guess it just goes to show that the power of advertising really does work. If it wasn't for me not eating dinner until really late and a Domino's commercial showing great tasting food, I may never had tried Domino's Pizza, and I would have been missing out on one of the easiest ordering experiences of my life, not to mention probably the best pizza crust I have had.
The wing coop was having a special for its VIP members (people who signed up for text messages) Any entree item buy one get one free (up to $10 bucks off) so even though we were over 40 miles away we decided to make the trek to SLC valley. One of the lunch crew works in SLC a few days a week so we decided to pick him up at the 3900 south trax station and then pay a visit to the Taylorsville location rather than the one in Holiday.
The names maybe the same but the decor is unique to each store, which I like because it doesn't feel like a franchise but more of a locals only kind of place. It had a very sport(ish) look and feel to it, with winter sports equipment hanging on the walls, and the now typical flat screen playing ESPN on the wall. (Always love a good sports game while eating wings, just something about it that feels right)

The Wing Coop offers over 17 different wing sauce flavors on ether grilled or friend chicken wings. They also serve other things as well, but when the name of the company is "Wing coop" you have to buy the wings.
Today I decided to try the [in order of most liked to least liked] Raspberry Chipotle (Fried), Honey Habanero (Fried), Confucius (Grilled)and the Tiger Teriyaki (Grilled).

By far my favorite were the raspberry chipotle sauce wings. They were nether too sweet from the raspberries or too 'smokey' from the chipotle. The flavors blended well, and when mixed with the blue-cheese dressing, the flavor was divine.

Honey Habanero

Next on my list of wings were the honey habanero. I had these wings at the Wing Coop in Holiday, so I knew what I was getting. Once again they were very good. They seemed to have a little more heat this time, which I appreciated. The heat of the habanero balanced out the sweetness of the honey. I always have a hard time eating foods that are ether too hot, or too sweet, but these wings find a good balance which makes it easy to eat a lot of them.

Confucius

The next two were a toss up. I didn't really care for ether the Confucius or the tiger teriyaki. I have a feeling a lot of it had to do with the fact that we had these wings grilled rather than fried. They both both seemed to be lacking in flavor. I had ordered the Confucius wings before from the Holiday store, and I loved them. So of course I had to order them again. This time around I could hardly eat them. The flavors just were not the same. I loved the last order of them because the sauce was a perfect blend of citrus and spice (ginger) that made me think about them the whole ride home, but this time something was different. I could hardly taste the citrus, and I couldn't taste the ginger at all.

Tiger Teriyaki

The tiger teriyaki reminded me too much of a teriyaki chicken that you might find at a Chinese restaurant (well duh you might say, they are called teriyaki wings) I guess I just don't care for teriyaki wings, they maybe just to mild of a flavor for me, or I just wasn't in the mood. I will admit I need to try them again, but next time I will need to fry them. They might have just been missing the crunchy texture that I have become accustomed to when eating wings.

The beautifully things about a place that offers 17 sauces for their wings is that no matter who you are, you are going to be able to find something you like. I was 50/50 on this trip and I look forward to another batch of the raspberry chiplote wings, my mouth is watering for them as I write this. I really liked the fried wings today and was a little disappointed in the grilled. They lacked the crunch that I was looking for and I struggled with the idea that they might be undercooked because of the texture, even though they were not.

I am glad I was convinced to make the trek to SLC for some wings from the wing coop. With the 1/2 of coupon and the great tasting raspberry chipotle wings, I would call this lunch trip a smashing success.

I have driven past CheeZsteak a few times and have always thought I should stop. I was held up at lunch today so I wasn't able to go out with the lunch crew. I was out and about on the town for a late lunch and decided to give it a try.

Walking in the doors I was a little confused as to where I should place my order. I couldn't see a menu anywhere. Lucky for me an employee pointed me to the place to place an order (on the other end of the restaurant) Once there I was able to see the menu behind the cashier (it has been hidden by the grills ventilation system). It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to order, I think it must have been a slow brain day for me, I am sure most people would not have this problem.

I think the best way to describe how the menu and the ordering works is subway. I would say this place is a like a subway that specializes in cheese steaks. So for those people who like to customize what they eat, then this place will be great for you.

Their base sandwich comes with meat, grilled onions and a choice of cheese. Each additional topping is a little extra, with mini-topping combo deals such as 3 toppings for $1.00 (for a 6 inch) instead of a $1.50. I personally love the idea of the customized steak sandwich. I already have in my mind what I want on my sandwich and I usually have to ask to have it made that way (which isn't always possible.) They offer a plethora of toppings , enough to make the pickiest of eaters happy.

Today I went with the 12 inch sub (actual length was 14 inches) with 3 additional toppings. So in addition to the grilled meat and grilled onions I had cream cheese, grilled mushrooms, grilled green peppers, and banana peppers. The cream cheese was grilled right into the meat and vegetables which I love (I suppose they could put it on the side if you wanted). The meat was a good size. Not too chopped up as to be minced but not so big you could choke on it. It was tender, and over all seemed to be a high quality beef. I would have preferred more black pepper, but I will know for next time.

Over all the sandwich was excellent (how could it not be I made it the way I like it). After finishing my sandwich I was completely stuffed. My only gripe that I have is that the price pushes this way past a simple lunch, but more into the realm of dinner which will cause me to hesitate to eat here on a regular basis.
I might have to say in this case, that sometimes quality just cost more.

For some reason I always have to order something different. When a place has the word "pizza" in its name you should take it as a hint to order the pizza, they are probably pretty good at it. Instead I was craving chicken wings and a donair (Eastern Canadian speciality, maybe even created in Halifax - see: History of the donair) and because of those cravings ended up with what had to be the worst chicken wings I have eaten (or in this case attempted to eat.)

I like my chicken wings to be large, plump and juicy. Cooked in the sauce to help lock in the flavor. The wings from Alexandra's were overcooked, small and had all of the sauce on the side. It was like eating leather off of a bone. Honestly they didn't even taste like chicken, which is what really turned me off of them. I ended up only being able to stomach one wing and threw the rest away.

As for the donair, well in the traditional sense it was really a Kabab Donar which uses lambs meet instead of beef. I was disappointed to see the lambs meet (I like this version as well) but I was really looking forward to the "Halifax Donair" with a spicy sweet garlic sauce and seasoned beef, but instead I ended up with lambs meet in Tzatziki sauce. Needless to say my overall experience was not good.
I find it difficult to review a buffet. Typically the point of a buffet is to offer a large variety of food as you can for the lowest price possible. Usually this lower price comes at a cost in food quality. I know this isn't always true, but I wanted to state my expectations when it comes to a buffet. With that said, onto the food.

Docs Power Buffet as it is known, features carved roast beef, peel & eat shrimp homemade soups, and a dessert bar.

The meat was thinly sliced and cooked to perfection. I really could have skipped all of the other food and just eaten the roast beef until I was full, but then whats the point of a buffet? Well quite honestly, I probably should have just gotten the roast beef. The rest of the buffet kind of lacked in comparison, setup by a high expectation of the roast beef. I guess you cannot go wrong with peel & eat shrimp because there is no preparation on the restaurants part. So other than having to peel them myself they were great.

The service was on par with what you would expect from a nicer sit down restaurant, with Doc himself greeting people at the door. I think it is a nice touch to have the owner greeting people, it shows a vested interest in their business and portray a feeling of trust. It is kind of like sitting down for dinner and the cook is eating his own food.

Over all the roast beef made the buffet good, but at the price of $14.99 I would be hard pressed to return for a second trip. Although with my coupon (which is easy to get and worked for the whole group) the meal was only $10 bucks which I feel is more in line with the cost of a typical buffet.

Today the lunch crew decided to go to "The Steak & Everything Grill" aka. "The Great Steak Sandwich co." The restaurant had a Mayberry feel to it, the kind where you could have a "my usual please" order. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We had a large group of guys with us today, all with strange requests but she handled it with grace. She had no problem when one of the lunch crew ordered a shake and told her to bring him something tasty. I think I have tried this at other places only to have them make me pick it myself. I actually swapped out my order of fries for an order of onion rings well after I had already placed my order, but once again it was no problem for our server.

There was a bottle of ketchup and fry-sauce on almost every table, which apparently is becoming one of my eating out experiences pet peeves when sauces are not provided for free, and in abundance.

The onion rings were great, the cheese steak was dry for my liking (makes me wish I would have added some marinara sauce.) The taste was eerily familiar to the Italian places Philly 'n' Everything, which is not a bad thing.

The bun was fresh and had a good heavy feel to it, but I felt it could have been cut a little deeper and the toppings could have been stuffed more into the bun. The whole time eating my sandwich I had to keep stuffing the toppings back into the bun.

Even though the portions appeared to be smaller than I would expect I walked away very full, and remained full for most of the day. I guess sometimes your eyes are smaller than your stomach.

After driving by Chubby's Cafe a few time and always saying "Hey we should eat there", it was time for the lunch crew to finally give it a try. I love greasy spoon like establishments, and from the outside it appeared that is what we were going to expect.

The inside was a modern but rustic environment with an atmosphere that I would expect from a place called Chubby's. There were at least four items on the menu that I wanted to try, but today I went with the Chubby Cheese steak and for $.50 cents more I got the beer battered fries. (The Reuben, American cheeseburger and Chubby classics buffalo wings will have to wait for another day.)

The service was quick and the cashier was very friendly and helpful when trying to decide what to eat. One of the coolest things I saw there was a fork and spoon dispenser. I love the idea of this because I am one of those guys that doesn't mind his own germs or hands touching things, but the idea of someone else touching my fork, or spoon just creeps me out. Plus being a kid at heart I loved pressing that button and seeing a fork pop out.

The first thing I noticed when my food arrived was that it was greasy, but being a greasy spoon it was perfect. I tend to always eat my fries first because I don't want them to get cold. The fries were very good and they provided fry sauce (for free might I mention).
The cheese steak bun was toasted (always a nice touch) and the contents were your typical cheese steak. Steak, a variety of grille bell peppers, possibly some grilled onions, swiss cheese, pepper jack cheese, and for a twist horse radish sauce.

The meat was large enough that I actually had to chew it which I feel is absolutely needed in a cheese steak, I had a nice mixture of red and green bell peppers. I am not sure if there were any grilled onions on the sandwich, maybe I should have looked harder before I ate it. My number one complaint though, this is a biggie in my book, was that the cheese tasted like a processed cheese. The kind of cheese that you would buy from the store, pre-sliced and individually wrapped. I absolutely do not like this kind of cheese and it made it very difficult for me to eat my sandwich. This in my opinion was a fatal flaw that will keep me from purchasing this sandwich again. To make this sandwich better, I would suggest using a different cheese (not flavor of cheese), adding more grilled onions and peppers and spicing it up with fresh ground black pepper.

I look forward to coming back to Chubby's Cafe and trying some of their other items on the menu, but I won't be getting the cheese steak again. Look for my next review which will be on their Chubby's classic buffalo chicken wings.

I needed to go to SLC today to run some errands, so part of the lunch crew decided to come with me so we could try out the Wing Coop (Today is almost a national holiday when it comes to work, so the other half of the lunch crew were all gone on holiday already.)

Ovi Maps couldn't find the place, so I had to rely on good old google maps to get there. Once we were pointed in the right direction finding the place was not hard at all as it is off of a major road, all be it in a small strip mall. The place from the outside appeared to be a hole in the wall, which for me is how it should be for wings. (A fancy wing place, just makes me think I am paying to much for my wings.) The inside of the restaurant is decked out in what I would call an "extreme sports" motif and once again I think this goes well with wings. After checking out the menu and seeing what they offered (17 sauces) we decided to go with the Wednesday special. 20 wings, 2 drinks and a large fry. We were able to choose 4 different sauces with our 20 wings, so we were able to try a few of them out.

When it came time to order we did end up standing at the cash register for quite some time, while the employees were doing something. Not sure if they were filling an order, or reading a book but it took some time to actually place the order. Two things that I noticed right away about the wing coop. 1st, all dipping sauces cost .50 cents (no dipping sauce for free) and 2nd, there was no sauce for the fries (ketchup or fry-sauce, or anything) For a place that prides itself on their wings sauce, they seem to forget about the staples (fries) and the sauce they need. Eventually I was able to find a container of ketchup packets.

Sauce flavors from top to bottom:

Our wings came out in a pretty timely manner on a large tray, with four containers of wings, one for each sauce. After attempting to determine what sauce was what, we ended up asking one of the employees, who also had to make a best guess. Even after asking the employee we still took a few minutes to figure out the flavors. I am not certain how they cook their wings, but I would prefer them a little more crunchy. Of the four sauces I tried today, I think I liked the Confucius sauce the best. It is described as "Our Asian sauce with citrus, sweet and spicy zest." which adequately describes the sauce. The sauce was lite, tangy and had a wonderful ginger flavor (unfortunately I didn't order these, so I was only able to sample one wing). I was only able to taste the sauce of the Kansas City BBQ and it tasted as I would expect. The two wing sauces I was able to eat a lot of were the Spicy Garlic and Honey Habanero. The later of the two having won them the National Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival winners award in 2007. I always love a sauce that portrays opposite flavors well. The sweetness of the honey coupled with the spiciness of the habanero blended well and I could see how this was an award winning sauce. The Spicy Garlic sauce was about what I expected, it was very simular in flavor to other spicy garlic wings that I have had elsewhere. They are listed as being almost the hottest wings they sell, but I honestly though the honey habanero were spicier and they are only listed as mild.

Overall my experience at the wing Coop was very pleasant, the food was good and the atmosphere was good. Would I eat there again? Yes. Would I recommend it to others? Yes. Are they the best wings I have ever had? Well I will answer that with a ?.

I am looking forward to trying some of their other sauces to see what flavorful concoctions they have come up with, and perhaps I will find myself a new favorite wing sauce, and in the process a new favorite wing shop.
Critique:

Today's choice for lunch was Magleby's Fresh in Lindon. My first impression upon walking into the restaurant was "Wow there are a lot women who eat here" (for some reason there was an abundance of women, most with kids, eating there for lunch today.)

I had heard that the Philly Cheese steaks at Magleby's Fresh were pretty good, so I decided it was time to try one out. Once I arrived and was inside the restaurant the pictures of different menu items, that were on the walls, kept making me want to change my mind about what I wanted to eat. The fish and chips kept calling my name, and I had to constantly remind myself that I was here for the Cheese steak.

Their Philly Cheese steak came with all my favorite toppings for a cheese steak: Peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and of course, cream cheese. All of their sandwiches also came with a choice of one of the follow side dishes: Fries, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, sauteed vegetables, or fresh fruit.

I went with their fries, which are battered before being fried, giving them an additional crispiness that I thoroughly enjoyed. The sandwich itself was of a good size, and was visually appetizing. The first thing that I noticed with my first bite was that the hoagie bun was slightly toasted which added a new degree of texture to the sandwich that I was not expecting, but liked a lot. The meat was cut up in small enough pieces so I didn't have to tear it with my teeth in order to take a bite, but big enough to give it some substance when chewing. The vegetables were also cut into larger sizes, which I prefer. I felt it gave them more of a presence in the sandwich, where as with many cheese steaks that I have eaten they seem to get lost in the over all build of the sandwich, and to top it all off it was smothered with cream cheese. I am a cream cheese kind of guy, so for it to be offered as part of the sandwich without me having to order it special, I think that is top notch. One of the key touches to the sandwich though was the fresh cracked black pepper which in my opinion just makes the sandwich that much better.

So to sum up my experience. The fries were good, the sandwich was great, and I walked away very full, all for eight dollars and seven cents.

Now for the tough questions:

Would I go back to Magleby's Fresh to eat another Philly Cheese steak? Yes.
Was the food worth they money? Yes.
Would I go back to Magleby's Fresh to eat? Yes.

I would recommend this restaurant to any person, regardless of what you like to eat you can find something on their menu you are going to love.

Yes I said it. Little Caesars sells wings. I guess one would have to expect this seeing as wings and pizza are like peas in a pod. Now to put you in the right frame of mind here, I had been cutting wood all day long and was pretty hungry when I pulled up to Little Caesars Pizza. After ordering my family's usual two pizzas, I decided to also pick up some wings. (Those pictures on the windows are how they sell to a hungry man, remember that, it is always the pictures that sell). First problem with the wings, and I consider this to be a big one, they charged me .75 cents for a small thing of ranch dipping sauce. No sauce was provided for free. So basically you get 8 wings for $5.99 plus tax, plus if you actually like to dip your wings in some sort of sauce (like I do) then another .75 cents for that. So for around $7.15 you get 8 wings with sauce.

OK now onto the actual wings. I personally like my wings to be more on the crunchy side, which to me is a sign of being cooked (baked or broiled). My first problem with the Caesars wings was the slimy texture of the wing, which tells my brain "Not cooked". I am not saying that the wings were not cooked, I am just saying that is how it appeared. I am not sure how these wings are cooked, maybe boiled. Once I was able to get past the problem of the texture, the wings were actually not bad, not awesome but not bad. Probably something I would expect from a fast food joint serving wings. They are definitely not homemade. The sauce is claimed to be a "buffalo style sauce" but I would probably say it was more of the Louisiana wings style, or maybe a mix of the two, which is where the problem lies, the sauce doesn't know who it is and it does nether of the two well. Ether be 100% buffalo style, or 100% Louisiana style. With that said, the wings were good enough to feed a hungry man, but would I ever go there just to get some wings, more than likely not.

When I first walked in I immediately felt like I needed an iPhone just to fit in. My friend and I just stood there in the middle of the restaurant looking confused as to if we were to seat ourselves or if someone was going to come and seat us, maybe we just needed an app for that. Finally after 4 or so minutes we were put out of our confusion by a waiter finally seating us. Once seated we were poured water from a fancy bottle to give the illusions of something nice, yet it was still just culinary water as noticed by the taste of chlorine. We were given paper lunch menus that were completely lacking in coherency. There were no titles given to the dishes, just descriptions of the ingredients, leaving me to guess as to what it really was. When our waiter finally came to take our order I had to ask what each dish was, the one dish I was looking at ordering actually was a sandwich even though it was no where to be found in the description.

Once I was able to order my food, I felt that it came out in a timely fashion. The particular dish I ordered was a sandwich with pastrami and well, I cannot remember what else was on it because it was just that memorable. My first thought upon seeing it was "Did they cook this with the George Foreman Grill?" The sandwich had a one dimensional taste, each flavor blended into the next leaving me with a forgettable sandwich. It was so greasy that the grease was literally running off my hands. Needless to say I was very disappointed in my $9 sandwich.

My friend who was with me ordered the Sausage Pizza, and gave me a piece. OK now here is something to remember. The pizza was a Brick oven style pizza, the first thing you notice when you take a bite is the freshness of the sauce. You can actually taste the real tomatoes that were used to make the sauce. The sausage was good, and I welcomed the splash of roasted green peppers. Had it not been for this slice of pizza, my experience at Pizzeria 712 would have been so negative that I would not have been able to in my right mind ever referred or even referenced this place for another to eat there. The pizza, which was about 14" was priced around $13 bucks, which was on par with what I would expect from a non-chained restaurant.

Once we were done with our meal and we had thrown in the towel (The napkins on the table), it took the waiter over 5 minutes or so to even recognize that we were finished. When he came to clean our table, he could/should have brought our checks, but instead we waited what seemed like another 10 minutes for the check. My overall time to eat lunch there (mind you it didn't seem that busy) was a little over an hour.

Over all, I was not impressed at all by the sandwich, but I did enjoy the pizza. The service was on par with the worst I have had. I have a simple rule on how to gauge the service of a restaurant. If my glass is empty that is poor service, if my glass remains empty that is bad service, if my glass is never filled, it is terrible service. To sum up how my glass was when I left, I actually left the establishment parched and needed to go get a drink.

The environment reminded me of nothing less than a trendy little downtown shop, ran by the straight legged skinny jean community. I don't think I would eat there again for lunch, possibly for dinner, but only if I ordered a pizza. The $10 bucks spent for lunch vs. the taste, vs the amount of food just doesn't make eating there worth it.
The Italian Place serves up some great sandwiches and salads, with the Steak & Cheese being their speciality. Their sandwiches come in 3 different sizes: Half ($4.79) Full ($6.99) and The Monster ($9.29). I usually order a Full and a water which brings my bill to about $7.50, but I think in the future (because the full is so filling) I might cut back to only the half sandwich and get it in the combo meal for the same price. The combo meal comes with a drink and your choice of a salad or potato chips.
Today I had a Full Philly `n' Everything, slightly modified to my liking. The Philly `n' Everything comes with: Steak, mushrooms, cream cheese, green peppers, onions & tomatoes. I like to add marinara sauce to the mix to give it that little extra bit a flavor. Today's sandwich was good as always, my only complaint being the roll (bun, hero) that they use is always on the dry and on the brittle side (I believe this is probably a roll that is close to what is used in the boroughs of New York City). If they were to change the roll to something more of egg style roll (I like the heavier feel of the bread) I think that the overall sandwich will benefit from it and would be better. The meat in today's sandwich seemed to be chopped up a bit finer than normal and I prefer larger chunks of meat to give the sandwich more texture which my mouth seems to enjoy.
Overall I quite enjoy The Italian Place, and I frequent the establishment often, which says a lot because I have rarely found a place out West that serves a Philly style cheese steak that is worth eating at more than once.

Today the lunch crew and I went to Smokehouse off of a recommendation of a friend of mine, he recommend the pizza, but being a lover of a good cheese steak I had to give their cheese steak a try.

The atmosphere had a typical BBQ feel to it, large bench like tables, and a wonderful smell of smoked meat. Our waitress was friendly when she greeted us and was cheerful about helping us to decide what side dish we wanted with our food. They provided a number of different side dishes ranging from baked beans, to fries. I ended up choosing coleslaw.

The cheese steak featured slow roasted smoke meat, with a house BBQ sauce green peppers and grilled onions. So far so good.

Usually when talking about food one would pretty much describe the taste and that description alone would be enough to determine if the food was good or bad, but in this instance I am going to have to bring in texture. The cheese steak had a wonderful BBQ flavor and the meat was very tender, but here lies the problem I had with it. The meat was too tender. Yes I said it the meat was too tender. This might not be a problem with most people, but with me it made it very difficult to eat. In my mind I already have an idea of what I think a sandwich should be like, so I am expecting to chew my meat, but in this case the meat was so tender it came across as more of a meat paste than meat. The only way I can describe this is the difference between eating a banana and eating a mushed up banana. If you have ever had to eat a mushed up banana then you know what I am talking about.

The cost of my sandwich and coleslaw after tax was nine bucks and seven cents. It was a filling meal, but defiantly was a little more than I like to spend on lunch.

After eating my Philly cheese steak, I had wished I would have gone with the known classic, their pulled pork sandwich, where the tenderness of the meat could have been fully appreciated. The next time I eat here, I will be ordering the pulled pork sandwich or a pizza.
The Wingshak (as I call it because saying "Rocky Mountain Wingshak, just takes to long) provides some tasty wings at a slightly high cost. For around 9 bucks you get 8 wings of one flavor, fries or tots (I love the tots choice) and a drink. 9 bucks is a little more than I like to spend for lunch, but I do like the wings so I usually end up eating here frequently.

The Wingshak provides 12 different flavor of wings. 8 flavors of the buffalo style, and 4 of the sweet style.
Today I ordered the garlic pepper wings, which in the past have been my favorites but today they seemed to be a little closer to the mild wings. They were lacking in pepper and garlic. Will I order them again? Of course, I have had them before and usually they are excellent.

Customer service was great. We were greeted warmly by the cashier, and at multiple times were asked how things were by both the cashier and the cook.

The most important thing behind taste (obviously) is for the money did I get my fill or do I feel like I need to eat again after I leave. The answer to this question is no. I always leave full, which makes the 9 bucks easier to swallow.
