Native New Yorker

Every time I pass through Show Low Arizona I have to stop by the Native New Yorker to eat. The tradition started with the day the restaurant opened (I happened to be around when it did) They had great grand opening prices which made me buy a lot of wings, and I have been addicted ever since.

Location:
391 W. Deuce of Clubs
Show Low , AZ 85901
(928) 532-5100

Price of Meal:

Wings: $0.65 each (normal)
Wings: $0.39 each (Tuesday & Thursday)
Critique:

Over the years that I have been going to the Native New Yorker it seems that my infatuation with the place has been dwindling. I haven't decided if it is because the food/prices are changing and I no longer think their wings are the best thing since sliced bread or if local places closer to home are finally catching up.

Arby''s Best Philly next to Philly?

I like the commercials Arby's is running for these new sandwiches. The spokes person is trying to explain to the people of Phillidelphia that he was saying that Arbys sandwich was the best Philly right after the original philly. You can see the comercial here. Arby's Misunderstanding.

Location:
  910 N State St
  Orem, UT 84057
  801-226-2117

Price of Meal:
  Sandwich: $4.99 + Tax

Critique:
Well Arby's is Aryb's. I have always enjoyed eating at Arby's.  People say that if you work at a place you won't be able to eat there after you quit, but I worked at Arbys as a teenager and still love it today.  So you might ask "Why review a fastfood chain" well because of the above mentioned commericial. That their Philly Cheese Steak is the "best Philly sandwich outside of Philadelphia"

Road Island Diner - A Step Back in Time

Nestled in hills in the small town of Oakley Utah is a historic diner that has been featured on the food network. Walking into the diner is like taking a step back into the past with its green Italian marble counter tops, tiled floors, and Tiffany glass windows. The food here is just a sideshow to the atmosphere.

Location:

 981 W Weber Canyon Rd
 Oakley, UT 84061
 (435) 783-3467

Price of Meal:

Cheese Steak $8.99
Soda $1.99
Cherry flavor shot $0.79
Total cost of meal + Tax = $12.60

Critique:

We had just gotten done backpacking in the High Uintas and decided that we were hungry enough to make the 20 mile drive out of our way to try out the Road Island Diner. I had heard they had a mean cheese steak and wanted to give it a try. The diner itself is an old 1939 O'Mahony Dining car. Which in of itself is impressive. To read more about the history of the diner car go to Jerry O'Mahony Dining Cars

Charley's Grilled Subs

The lunch crew headed to the mall today to find something to eat at the food court. I had actually brought a lunch with me to work and was intending to only come along for the ride. I was surprised to see the number of name brand fast food joints in the food court (I hadn't been there in years.) One place that stood out for me was Charley's Grilled Subs. There is something about a grilled steak sub that just speaks to me so I ended up deciding to give them a try.

Location:
575 University Pkwy
Orem, UT 84097
(801) 762-0888

Price of Meal:
Steak & Fries $5.00
Fry Sauce $0.25
Steak upgrade $0.20
Total cost of meal + tax = $5.88

Critique:
I think I have a preconceived notion about mall food court food, that all food purchased at a food court will be more expensive with smaller portions. In the case of Charley's Grilled Subs I would say that the price was actually pretty good, but the portions were smaller.

Chubby's Cafe - Satisfied my craving for a Reuben sandwich

I have been craving a Reuben sandwich for who knows how long, and Chubby's Cafe's Reuben hit the spot. It was spot on good.

Location:

Price of Meal:

Reuben Sandwich & fry $6.99
8 Buffalo Wings + Jumbalia $7.49
Toatal + tax $15.57

Critique:

It was back to Chubbys for lunch today, but this time it was for a Reuben sandwich that I have been craving since the last time we ate there. I normally don't review things others other Wings and Phillys so I decided to get an order of wings as well just so I could review them.

Today we ended up at La Jolla Groves for lunch. It wasn't a place that I would have normally picked for lunch, but I heard they had a cheese steak so I decided to go.

Wing Coop - A Tale of Two Cities.

Location:

  1678 W 4100 S
  Salt Lake City, UT 84123
  (801) 974-9464

Price of Meal:

 12 wings $10.99 x 2.
 6 wings $5.99 x2.
1 large fry, 1 large onion ring $8.85.
 Total Price /3 + VIP discount + tax $10.33.

Critique:

The wing coop was having a special for its VIP members (people who signed up for text messages) Any entree item buy one get one free (up to $10 bucks off) so even though we were over 40 miles away we decided to make the trek to SLC valley.  One of the lunch crew works in SLC a few days a week so we decided to pick him up at the 3900 south trax station and then pay a visit to the Taylorsville location rather than the one in Holiday.

CheeZsteak - Build it your way.

CheeZsteak; The subway of cheese steaks.  Because of the different ways you can create your cheese steak, this has become my favorite place to grab a cheese steak.

Location:

  1470 N. State Street
  Orem, UT 84057
  801-896-8388

Price of Meal:

  12 inch(+) cheezsteak $8.49
  3 extra toppings $1.75
  Total + tax $11.04.

Critique:

I have driven past CheeZsteak a few times and have always thought I should stop.  I was held up at lunch today so I wasn't able to go out with the lunch crew. I was out and about on the town for a late lunch and decided to give it a try.

Alexandra's Pizza - Known for its pizza probably not for its chicken wings.

When you are really hungry, and you have just gotten into town after a long day of traveling, it is probably always best to order something that you know is good rather than going out on a limb and hoping for the best, otherwise you will end up like me. Going to be hungry.

Location:

 1263 Queen St.
 Halifax, NS B3J 1M5
 Canada
 +1 902-425-1900
 Map

Critique:

For some reason I always have to order something different.  When a place has the word "pizza" in its name you should take it as a hint to order the pizza, they are probably pretty good at it. Instead I was craving chicken wings and a donair (Eastern Canadian speciality, maybe even created in Halifax - see: History of the donair) and because of those cravings ended up with what had to be the worst chicken wings I have eaten (or in this case attempted to eat.)

Magelbys - Docs Power Buffet

Location:

  1600 N. Freedom Blvd
  At the Courtyard Marriott
  Provo UT, 84606

Price of Meal:

Docs Power Buffet $14.99 (with coupon $10)

Critique:

I find it difficult to review a buffet. Typically the point of a buffet is to offer a large variety of food as you can for the lowest price possible. Usually this lower price comes at a cost in food quality. I know this isn't always true, but I wanted to state my expectations when it comes to a buffet. With that said, onto the food.

Docs Power Buffet as it is known, features carved roast beef, peel & eat shrimp homemade soups, and a dessert bar.

The roast beef was wonderfully seasoned with fresh cracked black pepper corns, accompanied by a light and tangy sour cream sauce (more of a lightly flavoured horseradish sauce. The meat was thinly sliced and cooked to perfection. I really could have skipped all of the other food and just eaten the roast beef until I was full, but then whats the point of a buffet?  Well quite honestly, I probably should have just gotten the roast beef.  The rest of the buffet kind of lacked in comparison, setup by a high expectation of the roast beef.  I guess you cannot go wrong with peel & eat shrimp because there is no preparation on the restaurants part. So other than having to peel them myself they were great.

The service was on par with what you would expect from a nicer sit down restaurant, with Doc himself greeting people at the door. I think it is a nice touch to have the owner greeting people, it shows a vested interest in their business and portray a feeling of trust. It is kind of like sitting down for dinner and the cook is eating his own food.

Over all the roast beef made the buffet good, but at the price of $14.99 I would be hard pressed to return for a second trip. Although with my coupon (which is easy to get and worked for the whole group) the meal was only $10 bucks which I feel is more in line with the cost of a typical buffet.
